Totally Random Header Images for Cutline

October 11th, 2006 · 134 Comments

A great way to make the front page of your Web site more dynamic is to use random header images. Instead of seeing the same image on every visit, users will see random images, thus making each experience on your site a little less predictable (and a little more fun!).

Get the Goods!

Basically, the theory (and thus the code) behind this is quite simple, and I’ve prepared a random header image tutorial that you can peruse at your leisure if you’re into that sort of thing.

But, because I’m all about hooking you guys up with things that are simple, easy, and good, I’ve taken the liberty of preparing a brand new header.php file that you can download and install in order to get cracking with random header images.

Header image randomizer!

Installation Notes: If you’ve made changes to your original header.php file, you may want to compare these two files first to ensure a smooth transition. Other than that, just overwrite the existing header.php file with this new one, and your headers will all be “randomized!”

Update: These files are now only provided for legacy support on versions 1.03 of the theme or older. If you’re running WordPress 2.1 and Cutline 1.1, then you’ll want this file for random header generation.

Some Web hosts do not support WordPress 2.1 on certain plans (MediaTemple’s old shared server plan, for instance), and because of this, I’ve chosen to keep these files around for folks who don’t have any other options. Of course, I suppose you could always switch to MidPhase, the hostess with the most-ess, but then you’d have too much of a good thing, right?

Assumptions:

This special header.php file assumes that your images are named according to the following default convention:

  • header_1.jpg
  • header_2.jpg
  • header_3.jpg
  • header_4.jpg
  • header_5.jpg

Special Case Solution

The default code in this new header file should work for most people, but what if you want to use the random effect and you want special images to appear on certain pages?

I’ve got you covered.

For you special cases out there, I’ve prepared yet another header.php file that contains the necessary PHP and XHTML to accommodate your needs.

So, instead of using the file referenced above, use this one instead!

Download the new, special-case header image randomizer!

Update: Once again, I’m leaving this file here for legacy support only. If you’re running WordPress 2.1 and Cutline 1.1, then you’ll want this file for special random header generation.

It should be pretty straightforward, but if you have any questions at all, you know where to find me!

    You can also use another technique that is slightly more generalized. Basically you just link to a php script instead of the image and the script pulls up a random image from the folder it’s in. The details are covered at A List Apart. (To be clear, I had nothing to do with making this, I just found it and used it on my blog and thought it might be useful to someone else, too.)

    This is such a great theme, I have decided to give back to the community. I have just released 10 images under Creative Commons pre-cropped to the proper size for the Cutline theme.

    If anyone is looking for nice header pictures for their blog or website, send them my way. If people like them, I will release more.

    Cheers!

    khmerbird,

    It looks as though your image may not be a native .jpg file. That is, perhaps it was originally a .bmp or a .gif, and you simply changed the file extension to .jpg in order to have it display on your site.

    I recommend one of two options here:

    1. Use the native file type by changing the file extensions in the header image declarations
    2. Use an excellent graphics program, such as Adobe Photoshop or Macromedia Fireworks, to change between file types

    Hello Chris,
    I really like yout theme, but I have a problem, I don’t know why but all changes that I do in code(translations) relative to text showed in the page as No comments translation to Ningún comentario seem to not allow special characters( I write in spanish). This is a code problem or a database problem? Thanks in advance

  • 10 Chris // Oct 16, 2006 at 1:31 pm

    Yece,

    I think it’s actually an issue of character encoding on the server. You can solve this by using the character entity reference for a particular character instead of the character itself.

    See how your ú in Ningún has the accent mark? To get that to appear properly outside of the boundaries of a post or comment, you’ll need to encode that character with its appropriate character entity.

    The characters show up correctly in posts and comments because WordPress comes equipped with a character conversion encoder that does this dirty work for you.

    khmerbird,

    Instead of linking to your “cropped” image (which happens to be totally unnecessary), link directly to this image.

    As long as you link to the file that looks nice, you won’t have any problems.

  • 15 Chris // Oct 17, 2006 at 3:11 am

    Hmm, I suggest simply uploading the good image in place of the bad one. I had forgotten that you were on the hosted version of WordPress at WordPress.com.

  • 16 Nick // Oct 19, 2006 at 1:58 am

    Chris, do you know if there would be a way to write an if statement to choose a set of banners depending on the blog category? Like, /lost or /desperate-housewives… then to integrate an array that would append a number like “_01.jpg”, “_02.jpg” to the variable image name, so that if the category was lost then it would dynamically pull: lost_01.jpg or lost_02.jpg based on the blog category?

    Like you said, complicated as hell. Could really extend a site, though. And I suspect you could make a pretty penny extending your system for such a case and selling it as an enterprise solution.

  • 17 Chris // Oct 19, 2006 at 3:17 am

    Nick, you could do it (I’ve done something similar for a test site). It involves carrying over WP query terms and storing them in variables.

    You may be able to wade your way through this muck at the WordPress Codex — at least that’s what I did.

    The solution is too much of a one-off, time-consuming bummer for me to post here. Sorry :)

    Chris,

    Nice theme.

    Question: what if I wanted only the front page to have a static image?

    Thanks.

  • 19 Chris // Oct 23, 2006 at 7:14 am

    Jim, if you want your front page to have a static image while rotating 5 pictures on your other pages, you will need to implement the following code:

    <?php if (is_home()) { ?>
       <img src=”path/to/header_1.jpg” />
    <?php } else { ?>
       <img src=”path/to/header_<?php echo(rand(2,6)); ?>.jpg” />
    <?php } ?>

    Please note that header_1.jpg will then be used only on the front page, and header_2.jpg through header_6.jpg will be rotated on all other pages of your site.

  • 20 Matt // Oct 23, 2006 at 7:03 pm

    Okay, now tell us how you put that little icon in the top-right corner of your banner image that says “Random header images - find out how” and links to this story.

    Pretty please?

  • 21 Kate // Oct 25, 2006 at 1:02 pm

    Oooh, that’s lovely… I agonized over the selection of beautiful images for the artmarketing site, then agonized again over which ones to put on which pages. Now, all singing and dancing!

  • 22 brian // Oct 27, 2006 at 11:54 am

    Matt- not to butt in, but remember the header is just a jpg image and you can edit it however you like.. I am fairly certain that the text in the header here - “Random header images - find out how” - is just something that was photoshopped in. You can make the banner appear however you want.

    Hope I’m not wrong. haha

  • 23 Chris // Oct 27, 2006 at 12:54 pm

    Brian,

    You’re wrong :)

    It’s a div overlay that is absolutely positioned within <div id="header_img">.

    I’ll post on it as soon as I get a minute. You got any to spare?

  • 24 Mario // Oct 28, 2006 at 4:30 pm

    Chris;

    I would like very much to know how do you do the overlay in the header image. Thanks

  • 25 Chris // Oct 29, 2006 at 1:13 am

    Mario,

    I’m going to put together a quick tutorial on that topic sometime this week. Stay tuned!

  • 26 Torley // Nov 1, 2006 at 4:31 am

    Wowza, this looks so elegant how you’ve put it together, Chris! The Cutline Theme sure looks nice too.

    I’m wondering, and I didn’t see this mentioned above, but is it easy to adapt this Random Header Images techniques for other blog templates?

    Thank you.

  • 27 Chris // Nov 1, 2006 at 10:59 am

    Torley,

    The idea behind that code can be adapted to any platform that uses PHP. The most generalized version of the code, called Simple Random Header Images for Your Blog, can be found at Pearsonified.

    Duncan,

    I use the FlickrRSS Plugin to pull images from Flickr. The major problem here, however, is that it is unable to pull random images because it uses a simple RSS feed to acquire the latest content.

    As soon as a solution becomes available, I’m sure it will makes waves within the WordPress community.

    I know that I, for one, will be all over it, and as soon as I hear about it, I’ll post it here.

    Chris,

    First of all i gotta thank you for making this out. :D

    I need some help over here. I would like to have random pictures for my blog, but specific picture on specific post/page.

    From what i see in the header.php , the only variable is the (is_page(’about’) . However, my target is not the about/archieve, but the post/page title. For example, i can have random images for the frontpage, about, and etc, but i want a specific image for my special written post/page.

    It would be lovely if this can be done.

    What should I tweak with the (is_page(’###’) ?

  • 35 Chris // Nov 30, 2006 at 11:49 am

    Lazo,

    Although it will result in code that is somewhat unwieldy, you can place random images on specific posts and pages.

    Doing this with Pages is simple, mostly because I’ve already done the coding for you in this Special Random Header Image file.

    Making this work for Posts is only slightly more complicated. Instead of using a conditional statement to target a Page, you’ll want to use a conditional to target a Single Post:

    <?php if (is_single(’post-slug‘)) { ?>
    <img src=”image/location” />
    <?php } ?>

    In this case, post-slug is what you entered (or was auto-generated) in the Post Slug box on the Write Post page of your WordPress Administration Panel. Using this structure queries the DB and targets the post containing the specified slug.

  • 37 David Johns // Dec 2, 2006 at 8:12 am

    Is it possible to make each of the images clickable with a different link? I am looking for a theme for a record company blog and it would be useful to have a random image of each of our artists as the header, along with a link to their relative site or page.

  • 38 Chris // Dec 2, 2006 at 9:13 am

    David,

    Theoretically, you could call up completely random bits of code; and therefore, you could call up different clickable images.

    To illustrate, let’s say you have 3 bands that you want to feature and rotate randomly in the header.

    1. Run this code — <?php $rotate_img = rand(1,3); ?>.
    2. Use $rotate_img to create a PHP conditional that determines which band’s image and link to pull up.

    Once you’ve sectioned off a block of XHTML with some conditional PHP, you can include whatever you want. In this case, it’ll be a hyperlinked image for a particular band.

  • 39 David // Dec 3, 2006 at 9:35 am

    Thanks Chris, its good to know that it is possible. However, I have no idea about PHP and got totally lost when you started to point out the code to me. Is it a simple case of adding the hyperlinks to the code that is already in the template? Or is it a more complex endeavour?

  • 40 Chris // Dec 3, 2006 at 1:37 pm

    It’s a little more complex than that.

    You’ll need to construct an if statement in PHP to control what gets displayed.

    If you’re familiar with Computer Science (logic) algorithms in general, then the tenets remain the same when dealing with PHP. You can find the proper syntax located in example modules at php.net.

How can I do both so that I can use my logo and still have a Weblog title? Currently, I made the H1 title pop out on the far right, and made it very small. (I know, it looks like dog poop!)

    I have quite a bit of work to do regarding finalizing the 1.1 release, and part of that work is to issue new random header image files that will work with the new version.

    I noticed that the random header file is not calling the custom.css file. To get it working, I inserted: /custom.css” type=”text/css” media=”screen” /> at line 12. And replaced at line 23.

    Hope that’s all I needed to do. Thanks for the great theme, btw.

    -Marlo

  • 67 Mark // Feb 5, 2007 at 8:54 pm

    I think Marlo is on to something, except my line numbers are a little different than hers. I did the line 12 fix and it added my custom css back in but blew pretty much everything else out of the water.

    Could you maybe take a look at the random header file (not using the special one)? Also, what’s the impact of the IE specific stuff on the custom css file. do they reference it?

    Thanks.

  • 68 Mark // Feb 8, 2007 at 8:04 am

    OK, I answered my own questions about the IE specific stuff once I had a moment to have a look.

    Any word on the random header file and custom css? I tried Marlo’s suggestion, although I have no idea what she replaced at line 23 as my line 23 is the body tag. Just adding /custom.css where she did breaks all the css for the blog.

    Am I wrong, or does your random header file not work with custom css? I can not get the custom.css to work with your random header.php. I tried just adding class=”custom” to the body tag, but that didn’t work.

  • 88 Dustin // May 1, 2007 at 6:34 pm

    If your host doesn’t have PHP installed, you need a new host. You can bet that any commercial hosting service has the preprocessor installed. Check it by creating a file called phpcheck.php with the following code:

  • 92 Peter Beck // May 24, 2007 at 3:30 pm

    Howdy — I’m having the same problem that a few folks have noted above, namely that for WordPress 2.1.3 and Cutline 1.1, inserting the randomization files breaks the custom css changes I’ve made.

    If it can be corrected via a line or two of extra code, I’d really appreciate more explicit instructions about what and where to place them.

    Hi–I’m on wordpress and use cutline–and I really like it–but I cant figure out whether the random images is actually available to me. I currently have a free of cost blog and I dont believe I have access to customizing CSS, so is this feature available to someone in my position or would an upgrade be necessary? I’ve double checked my wordpress tabs in my presentation and theme area and I dont see where I can simply place this random image code (I’m still a little new to blogging, so….) Thanks

    I uploaded the random header thing from Chris and now I have no image and something funky has happened to the margins. I don’t even know where to find code — I just uploaded to images folder and expected my five images to work. It did remove the default image.

    Thanks so much for this Chris. I was wondering tho, after I uploaded the random header file, my blog description is gone?

    I noticed that its missing the “bloginfo(’description’);” on the random page, is this why?

    How do I add my description back? Thanks!

  • 117 Stephanie // Dec 13, 2007 at 8:07 pm

    For that guy and whoever else who have uploaded the new header.php and are baffled because your pic is the wrong size - go into the code and change the image width at the very end of the page from 770 to 970 - the Cutline 3-column split uses a wider header. xo.

  • 121 Leif // Feb 12, 2008 at 1:28 pm

    Please help me with my header images. All I get is the white box with the little red x and no photo.

    The random header file is working correctly (when I right click on the header, it says header_1.jpg, and when I click refresh and then right click on the header, it shows header_5.jpg, so I know it’s working). Just can’t get the photos to appear. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve re-ftp’d the images and chmod’d them.

    I had the random header photos working perfectly back in November, but my host physically moved their servers from one city to another city, and since then the photos won’t appear. Coincidence?

    I’ve reduced the size of the header image to 240 x 30 just so it doesn’t look bad to visitors.

    Thank you for your help! I love cutline.

  • 125 P // Feb 23, 2008 at 12:36 pm

    Hi, great theme !

    Am trying something new with the random header images. It should be able to fit 7 images that are 140×140 pixels big. Now I’d like the header to pick 7 of these images at random and stack them next to one another covering the whole width of 980.
    I’ve come to this so far:

    <img src=”/images/.jpg” width=”140″ height=”140″ alt=” random header image” >
    <img src=”/images/.jpg” width=”140″ height=”140″ alt=” random header image” >
    <img src=”/images/.jpg” width=”140″ height=”140″ alt=” random header image” >
    <img src=”/images/.jpg” width=”140″ height=”140″ alt=” random header image” >
    <img src=”/images/.jpg” width=”140″ height=”140″ alt=” random header image” >
    <img src=”/images/.jpg” width=”140″ height=”140″ alt=” random header image” >

    But the code doesn’t put the images next to one another but underneath each other.. What do I need to change to get this going ?

  • 126 P // Feb 23, 2008 at 12:38 pm

    Hmm, the code doesn’t appear like I put it..

  • 127 Paul Hamilton // Mar 2, 2008 at 6:16 pm

    Hi, I wonder if someone can answer my question ? Firstly love the theme Cris, I have commented out the origional 5 themes with the help of a small tutorial video. I then produced a new header which was saved as a jpg. The problem I have is I have no idea how to turn the header file into a php script so I am able to paste the script into the header editor, or if there is another way to perform this task even better As you can probably tell all this is very new to me.
    If anyone is able to help that would be great.

    Thanks,

    Paul.
