When I upgraded to the newer wordpress I got access back to work my widgets. I was able to do some modifications of the search box in the style sheet. Here is what I did to change to my colors, etc. (I actually make my changes in the custom.css file so that is why these start with .custom )

I really wanted a header that said SEARCH SITE and then to have the box for people to type in - but until I figure out how to do that this will work for me...

/*---:[ search form styles - changes the color of type and borders ]:---*/

.custom #search_form { }

	.custom #search_form .search_input { width: 183px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffdb43; color: #6d5fb3; font: normal .1em arial, helvetica, sans-serif;; border-top: 2px solid #6d5fb3; border-left: 1px solid #999; border-right: 1px solid #999; border-bottom: 1px solid #999; }

	.custom li.widget .search_input { font-size: 1.1em !important; }

 .custom #search_form .search_input:focus { border-top: 1px solid #999; border-left: 1px solid #999; border-right: 1px solid #999; border-bottom: 2px solid #999; }

Follow up:

I made changes to the search display that fit the CSS changes I have made - but now I can't get access to any of my widgets. So don't change wp_includes/widgets.php unless you have time to backward engineer things...

While I was making the change I had back up of the original file - but once the appearance looked nice I zapped that. Didn't think it would mess up in another place...

You are right - the search display can be changed in wp_includes/widgets.php

I don't know enough to get it to look nice - but I changed the length and got it to stay within my sidebar...

I'm not sure on this. I had the same problem, and that's why I decided I wouldn't use widgets. I like to be able to see and modify the code in my sidebars directly, so I'm not sure what to tell you since I decided not to use widgets like 10 mins after messing around with the theme. The recent posts thing looked crappier as a widget too.

I'd be interested if someone knows how you edit the code for the widgets. I know they aren't in the theme folder, so maybe look around in the wp_includes folder.

I'm new to Wordpress, so I don't know if this something simple I'm missing.

I'd like to add the search field to my sidebar. The problem I have is the styling. The search looks like nice in the default sidebar. But when I change the sidebar contents, the search box in the sidebar looks incredibly vanilla, without styling. You can see what I'm talking about at the top right of my site.

http://www.foobarsoft.com

How can I fix this? I can't tell where that little bit of code comes from. The sidebar file contents are only used when you don't have a dynamic sidebar, so I can't edit it there.

Thanks for the help.

PS: I'm on Cutline 1, not 2.
