Is this so elementary that everyone thinks I just a clod and not worth bothering with? I've looked at all the documentation. I have programmed for many years. I'm just not familiar with WordPress, and when I do what seems obviously the right thing, it doesn't work.

In the case in point, I pasted the text from feedburner for establishing a link to an email subscription page. I also tried a general hyperlink code piece. In both cases, no active link. My site is roylat.com. Look at the bottom of the sidebar for "Jackson Forum." This was entered as html hyperlink code in a text widget.

I'm using cutline 2.1. When I put the html for a link in a text widget, the text appears on the blog, but the link is not active. Can anyone help with this. It seems so elementary, but I can't get it to work. It seems that it must be a WP problem, but could cutline be responsible? Any help will be appreciated.

Never mind. I found out what the problems was and fixed it. I added the "li" brackets to the links while I was supposed to add the "P" brackets to them. That's what's given me the trouble. So I fixed them and now the view in both the FireFox and the IE looks great!

Hi there. I'm new here and I have a problem with installing my cutline to my wordpress site. In FireFox, the theme looks fine, but in IE, the line and bullet spacings over and underneath most sidebar widget headers are stretched all the way to the other side of the page. The fonts in the sidebar widgets are real small, too.

How am I going to fix this so that cutline can look great in both IE and Firefox?

arm0110:

nycdeb provides a helpful answer here: http://cutline.tubetorial.com/forums/topic/multiple-sidebars-for-page-templates?replies=7

But I'll rephrase the advice, because there were some things unclear to me that might be unclear to others.

1) If you have not already done so, you'll need to make your files for sidebar.php, r_sidebar.php, and functions.php writeable.

2) Your sidebar.php and r_sidebar.php files should, respectively, have a line of code like this:

<?php if (!function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') || !dynamic_sidebar(1)) : ?>

and

<?php if (!function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') || !dynamic_sidebar(2)) : ?>

This line tells the function.php file which sidebar is which. But the function.php has only one call line for for the first sidebar file. So you need to create another call line calling out to the second sidebar file.

3) Do this by opening the function.php file. Find the line (near the top) that reads:

if ( function_exists('register_sidebars') )
register_sidebar(1);

Copy the "register_sidebar(1);" line. Paste the new line below it. Change the "1" to a "2" like this:

    register_sidebar(2);

Be sure to keep the semicolon!
And that's it! You should see "Sidebar 1" and "Sidebar 2" in your widgets options.

The "Pages" widget was turned on in the widgets area,

Wordpress Dashboard -> Presentation -> Widgets

So, apparently you can either have static content from the sidebar files, OR widgets, but not both.

The work around for that is to take out that IF statement or move the ENDIF statement so it doesn't exclude the static items.

Turns out, in "sidebar.php" when I take out the test for widgets, the sidebar code is displayed:

That implies that my widgets aren't working and that something else gets displayed instead. I still don't know where that code is that's displaying the "Pages" links in that sidebar.

My blog is displaying Pages in the sidebar and I need to modify someone else's site to do the same. Problem is I can't find the code that is displaying the page links.

I found your post, Chris, about displaying Pages in the header navigation and was able to get that working:

Cutline Q&A Part 1

But I want pages to be displayed in a column in the sidebar, not the header navigation.

I've searched the Cutline source code for keywords such as
<h2 class="widgettitle">Pages</h2>
but that string is not found anywhere in the code. (It is found in the "View Source" of the rendered page.)

I've also searched for the keyword, wp_list_pages. But this is not found either.

The word "Pages" is being displayed and the page links are below that, so it's a bit confusing why I can't find the code for it.

Another confusing part of this puzzle is that in sidebar.php, which is where the code for Pages should be, I see the code for "Recent Posts", but those are NOT being displayed in the rendered page.

<li class="widget">
    <h2>Recent Entries</h2>

Hello:

I have the same question as Suzanne above with the same theme Cutline-3-column-split-1.1. plus a problem with listing category names by their parent-child hierarchy.

Can the post categories listing be sorted in anther manner other than alphabetically by the category names? Can I set a custom sort order? I can do so in an "ugly" way by simply using numbers in the category names...

01 Pears
01.1 Apples
01.2 Oranges
02 Apricots

... but is there a prettier, invisible way of setting the list order?

My other problem is with the category list sorting alphabetically by all the category names rather than by the nesting parent-child hierarchy I had set up using the Dashboard>Manage>Categories editor.

After installing the theme on a fresh WP install, I entered some sample categories and set some up as children of a parent category. At first, the nested parent-child hierarchy displayed just fine in the right sidecolumn where the theme displays the category list "out of the box".

Then I used the Widget editor to move the Categories list from the right sidecolumn to the left sidecolumn. After I did that, I lost the nested parent-child hierarchy.

Thanks in advance for any help here.

Sidebar 1 displays in the Widgets admin area and works fine, but Sidebar 2 does not appear at all in Widgets Admin. I have not modified the code from the original downloaded files, so why the r_sidebar (which has the widget code in it) does not display in Admin is a mystery. Anyone know how to fix this???

hi all,

I know it got marked resolved - and I was puzzled when it happened since it wasn't at that time resolved. I poked and prodded the coding as much as possible but I haven't been able to find an easy solution that didn't involve widgets.

I'll try and explain though I admit in advance, I am crap at explaining things like this. I just poke at code until it does what I want and I'm not always sure why it works.

The answer I've cobbled together so far involves using 3 sidebars (the ones that exist already: l_sidebar.php and r_sidebar.php and one I called sidebar3.php). To create, sidebar3, I just made a copy of the code for "right" (since I was planning on that one being the one that changed most) and I renamed it by including a call for Template Name: sidebar3 at the top. That way, the templates that are supposed to call that one, know which one to get.

In functions.php, I changed the number of sidebars to 3 and lo! there appeared 3 sidebars on my widgets presentation page so I could mess with the contents of the various sidebars. I also grabbed the JAW Duplicate Widgets plugin to allow me to make multiple copies of specific widgets ('cause I needed two sidebars to include "Recent Posts" and stuff like that. It also allowed me to make quite a few "Text Box" widgets which I used for ads.

So, having created the sidebars, I went about creating templates and making sure that the sidebar I want on the right (I've left the left one pretty consistent) is name of the sidebar after the TEMPLATEPATH include near the bottom of the page.

I would have liked to have avoided all the widgeting but *shrug* - no other answer seemed to be forthcoming and I didn't know how to "unresolve" the thread since I wasn't sure how it got marked resolved in the first place.

I've done my best to explain. I'm not sure I helped but I hope I did.

The newly released Sharethis version (2.1b1) allows one to position the widget at a location of one's choice. In the WP admin area under "Options" select ShareThis. This assumes that you have version 2.1b1. There are three menu choices which all have to be set to "no". Then you need to mod the pertinent Cutline php-files (index.php,pages.php,archives.php,single.php), to get the widget to appear where you want it. This bit of php code needs to be inserted:
<?php if (function_exists('sharethis_button')) { sharethis_button(); } ?>

I chucked the addthis widget, so now I'm just seeking to have the sphere and share it widgets appear on the same line. Any thoughts?

As you'll see on my blog http://www.yonigreenbaum.com I'm using the sphere, share it and addthis widgets. They appear at the bottom of posts. Currently the icons are stacked vertically, with some odd spacing. I would like to present them vertically, but am not really sure which file to edit? Or if there is another way to get the look that I would like it. Suggestions? Thoughts? much appreciated.

One place to look is Presentation -> Widgets. You should see Sidebar 1 and Sidebar 2. Another is in the Theme Editor (also under Presentation) look for the files labeled r_sidebar.php and l_sidebar.php. Finally, you can download the widgets file from the directory labeled blog on your server for access to the widgets. -Good luck.

I am using the 3 column layout. In my admin area I have only one sidebar - functioning fine with widgets, etc. But on my site, there are two sidebars displaying (which I want). I just have no idea where the content is coming from and I would like more control over this.

Hmmm not sure. I hate widgets and don't use them, but if all else fails you can reinstall cutline.

Closely examine your static page and make sure it has code calling the proper sidebar.php file. Then examine that file and make sure that the code in it looks fine. You could also just try overwriting your sidebar files with the originals you downloaded if you don't want to reinstall the whole theme.

I couldn't get your Buying One site to come up, so I couldn't check your sitemap and see what entries you have posted..

When I first started my site I set up my categories before I entered information. When I checked the categories section of the side bar only the categories that had entries in them appeared. As I added more entries with different categories, then those categories started appearing in the sidebar.

Hope that helps.

Apologies for misspelling categories!

In case it is relevant, I just noticed that the categories do show up if I click on the Archive link but not on the front page, which is a static front page.

Hi everybody,

I installed the three column version of Cutline on Buying One and when I dragged the Categories widget into the left column, the original leftcol content disappeared but the categories didn't show up.

I then removed the widget, hoping things would go back to the way they were but no luck.

Any ideas please?
