Cutline Problems, Q&A Part 1

August 29th, 2007 · 39 Comments · How To

As promised some aids, if you’re experiencing problems with your Cutline installation, both 2 or 3 column version. Most problems returning in the comments have already been addressed by Chris in older entries, but let’s recap the most common questions in the comments.

My Archives Don’t Work

This problem has been addressed by Chris in 2 different entries.

1. Creating About And Archives Pages.
To make sure your archives work, you’ll first have to make sure you have an archives page. Creating this page is simple. Follow these steps (Copy&Paste from Chris’s entry)

  1. Log into your WP Administration panel and click on the Presentation link.
  2. Assuming you have the Cutline theme activated, you’ll notice a link in the sub-navigation menu called Cutline Options.
  3. On the Cutline Options page, simply check the box next to “Enable the Cutline Archives Page.
  4. Click the Update Options button to create the Archives page.
  5. In order to ensure that your new Archives page gets published properly, you’ll need to click on the Manage link in the main navigation menu.
  6. Once there, click on Pages in the sub-navigation menu.
  7. One of your pages will contain the text “Archives” in the Title field – find that page, and then click on the Edit button for that page.
  8. Locate the Save » button (which resides just beneath the main text entry box), and click it. You’re done!

If you don’t see a page titled Archives in your page manager, write a new page, called Archives, chose the Archives template for this page and use archives as post slug Template and Post Slug can be found in the sidebar of your admin panel).

2. Why My About And Archives Link Don’t Work
If you click both the About and Archives link, and none of them works, although you have created both pages, make sure that you use the permalinks structure for your WP blog. Chris explains everything in this entry.

The Sitemap Doesn’t Work

If you click in the footer the link to the sitemap and this leads you to a 404 page, you might not have created a Sitemap for your site yet. Again create/write a new page. Call this page Sitemap and use as template Sitemap. The post slug should be sitemap too, exactly as we did with the archives page.

Change The Header Navigation Links To Display Your Pages

If you want to change the standard Cutline header navigation links (Front Page, Archives, About) in to a horizontal list of your pages, replace the line 35 – 36 in header.php

<li><a <?php if (is_archive() || is_page('archives')) echo('class="current" '); ?>href="<?php bloginfo('url'); ?>/archives/">archives</a></li>

<li><a <?php if (is_page('about')) echo('class="current" '); ?>href="<?php bloginfo('url'); ?>/about/">about</a></li>

<?php wp_list_pages('sort_column=menu_order&depth=1&title_li='); ?>1

So far Cutline Problems, Question & Answers Round 1, more to come over the next days.
And yes, I’ll install forums for the community too. 🙂

1This will display links to all first level pages, not to subpages.

I’m having problems with a Tumblr RSS feed in the Cutline sidebar widget. Is this where I should post about it? There’s no Cutline forum I can find.

  • Franky

MegaPickles, try burning your tumblr feed in to RSS2.0 with FeedBurner.

Open a Feedburner account, import your tumblr feed and go to Optimize —> Convert Format Burner. That what I use to do when feeds don’t update for certain importers/widgets.
    Hope that helps you further.

  • MegaPickles

Franky! This was the perfect solution. Thanks so much.

Thanks for the re-start. I stumbled on Cutline when the previous Theme developer I used went dormant. I was a little concerned this would happen here. Looks like it won’t so just a thanks for getting the support back up and running.

Cutline is great, and my first attempt to use it went smoothly, all the pages works.
The problem is when I was trying to move all the sidebar to the left, by cut and pasting the line to show r_sidebar to below one that shows l_sidebar, the about page shows post (or archive, i’m not sure) instead of the about page, and when I delete the line to show the r_sidebar in page.php, it displays correctly.
How do I correct this and still able to put all sidebar to the left.
    How did it go wrong?

Hi – Like everyone else here – I absolutely love the design.

What I would like to know – is how do I customize the pages. I for instance have a podcast show and write articles for the Print media – I would hence like to have instead of showcase, forum etc the pages Frontpage followed by the page Podcasts followed by the page Articles. I’ve been trying to figure this out for a week now, and am still clueless.

    Someone help me pleaaaaaase. 🙂

I have really enjoyed the theme so far but now I seem to be unable to get the frontpage banner image show up? It was displaying fine until two days ago when it stopped showing up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I’m trying to install the 2-column Cutline.

My sitemap problem remains unresponsive to the solution you describe above.

I notice also that the About and Archives pages exist in Page Management, as do any new pages I create. They are all visible when I try to view them thru Page Management….but none can be accessed from the website itself. I get 404 pages for them all. I tried the remedy you suggest above for non-working Sitemap but it remains another 404, unviewable webpage like the others.

My webhost provides only WordPress 2.0.1. Would this be a factor?

  • Amberlynn

Thanks for this post, it’s been very helpful. I was wondering if you could tell me how to prevent the sitemap page from showing up in the header navigation links. (I have created other new pages I’d like to show up, though.)

  • Ardi

Wow!! Wonderful!! I’m a wordpress newbie. And you make my new steps LOTS EASIER!! ^_^

  • doc

I made the change to list my pages and it basically works but I have 2 problems.

I would still like a link to the front page. How do I add that?

My pages now ask for comments. These pages are not intended to be blog entries. How can this be remedied?

    I’m trying to do a Turkish website with your theme which I think is great. However, I seem to have screwed up on the archive’s page. I ended up making a page and using the url page id out of frustration. (;
I don’t know how to fix this. Can you please help? (Don’t worry about the Turkish words – I didn’t touch any of the code, eg., the arsiv page is still called “archives” in the code. Thanks very much if someone or Chris can help.

I’ve got several websites all using cutline with no problems, but I can’t get the sitemap working on the above site. If I put in it works fine, but if I click on view page or click on sitemap at the bottom of the theme i get nothing. any help please?

  • Mark Traphagen

Don’t know if this is a theme-specific problem, but others on the WordPress forum seem to think it may be.

I’m continually having the frustrating experience of entering long posts or pages in the visual editor, then after saving or publishing them, having all the paragraph breaks disappear, so that the text is now in one big long paragraph.

I’m running the 3-column version under Mac 10.5 (Leopard). The problem occurs in both Firefox and Safari (latest updated versions).

  • Tim Christie

Thanks for this post. Was ripping my hair out to try and fix these specific problems. Solved Everything for me.

MichelleVan – read the section in the article under the heading “The sitemap doesnt work”. I had the same prob and solved all for me.

I’m having problems with a Tumblr RSS feed too in the Cutline sidebar widget. Is this where I should post about it? There’s no Cutline forum I can find.

Can you tell me how you build a blog with cutline 3-column split and eliminate the admin menu on the pages that display. I have looked at many blogs of this theme and they are not showing the menu. Where do they put it?

  • nikosrf

How do i make the subpages menu to appear ?
(not in the main manu, but somewhere in the right column maybe)

  • anu

I’m thinking of using cutline theme for my wordpress blog. Just wondering if i’d be able to add google adsense without any design issues. Also would i be able to use this video aggregator plugin
    ( without any problem?

  • Erik

Hello, and thanks a lot for your themes. Since some days I’m using the ” Cutline 1.2, 3 Column-Split version (
and I’m feeling fine with all, but experienced problems with showing up archives: every day of a month is listed with accurate dates, but all months (headline at the top) are listed with “Entries from March 2008″… I uploaded again all theme files (so all changes I have done before were eleminated), but unfortunately the error is still existing… Is there any help possible? Thanks in advance!

  • Ron

Does anyone have an answer to nikosrf’s question about getting sub-pages to show up with their parent page?

  • Rusty Muns

Hi. I had the problem with the about and archives pages. With some trepidation, I followed the steps above, and, to my amazement, got both the pages to work. I was so proud. Then I realized that in making those pages show up, I had somehow broken the links to all my audio files, which is a big deal because this website is basically a podcast. Any suggestions on how to get it all flying at the same time will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I’m trying to get rid of the ‘Front Page’ page. Can you help?

    • Cutline Moderator

There is no page called Front Page. It’s jut a link to the topmost level of your website which is your homepage. You can change the name by editing your header.php and finding the said text.

  • Lippy

I am finding that CUTLINE will not allow the use of plug-ins. Am I correct here?

I’m using the FREE version of WP software on my “Tequila Whisperer” site here:
