Cutline Is Alive!

August 23rd, 2007 · 46 Comments · Site Updates

Seeing someone leave a project is always a sad thing to watch, especially when a talented person like Brian Gardner leaves a community. But Cutline and its thriving community will live on and I am glad to announce that from now on I’ll help you with your questions.

The next days will be devoted to catch up with the questions asked in diverse comments. Keep your eyes on this site for entries addressing those problems, starting next week.

In September a new Cutline mod will be released, honoring some of the greatest actual web designers.

But Cutline would never have been Cutline without you! All of you have helped Cutline to grow to one of the most vibrant WordPress theme communities around. Tell us in the comments what you would like to see here in the future, how you would like to see evolve Cutline and its community!

    Hi,

I think a good start might be if you introduce yourself. πŸ™‚ I doesn’t say a lot about who you are…

Sorry if this sounds snippy. It isn’t intended to be.

  • FrankB

Ehem, sorry: The second I should have been in quotes…

  • Rory

I am glad to announce that from now on I’ll help you with your questions.

You didn’t tell us who you are.

  • Franky

FrankB and Rory, I used to blog at Am I Famous Now when I discovered Cutline. Since then I have mainly worked with Cutline, but I am rather unknown in the WP theme sector.

I’ll do my best to continue the legacy of Chris and Brian, and think knowing Cutline rather well.

  • Rory

Seems like this site will be in the hands of a passionate Cutline user, Franky.

Looking forward very much to what you will do in the time ahead.

  • the taxiemrist

How do I contact you about issues?

  • Zoe

Excited to hear Cutline lives on, and if you’re soliciting a wishlist, I’d love an attachment.php file so that we could have a click through from thumbnail page for some images so we can give the artwork title, artist information, etc, and advice on how to turn off comments on those pages (the artwranglers.com.au site is a small artist’s representation/collection management business)

    Thanks

  • Zoe

    – and in case you look at the site please know that the boss insisted on the 1 px line around the header due to an irrational fear of white space πŸ˜‰

  • Zoe

Oh, and some help in styling a search box to go in a text widget would be awesome!

  • OMSH

I love Cutline and am looking forward to your feeds.

I’m trying to figure out why my previous/next don’t work in single.php, but other than that Cutline still makes me smile and I’m still workin’ with it.

OH, one thing I’d like to see is Cutline XHTML Valid. I had to work to validate it when I got it going. Is it valid yet?

  • Franky

    Zoe, noted.

OMSH, Cutline will be XHTML (Transitional) valid and also have microformats on the main and entry pages in the next release.
Your next/previous on the entry pages works for me.

  • vince

    Hi Franky,

On the verge of bailin’ , thanks for taking over the helm. My pressing question is how do we create a backgrouind/border to make either side of the content area non-white?

    thanksagain,
    Vince

  • Franky

vince, you need to wrap everything in a new div to obtain that.
I’ll upload a Cutline mod I once made in the next 24 hours where I’ve added that twist. And I’ll write a shor tutorial how to add a background to Cutline.

    Hi

Cutline is my favourite theme. I do have 2 problems with it though….and I am a novice. My about and archive button at the top don’t go anywhere. How do I repair that.

My font keeps changing throughout and I don’t know what I am doing to change that. I really would like it to be uniform.

  • K.G. Schneider

My #1 request: I’d really like it if author names could show up in posts. I am sure it’s just a tweak I could figure out from the Codex or by looking at another theme… I looked at the post template for the veryplaintxt theme, hoping it would give me enough clues, but don’t feel confident to build this on my own.

  • Franky

K.G, in both index.php and single.php remove on line 14 <!– and –> and the author names will show up.

  • Franky

buttercup, this entry explains how to solve the problem.

  • K.G. Schneider

    Franky, worked great!

  • OMSH

It does? Hmmmm … I can’t see it. I see the post titles for next/previous, but I meant the bit of code for Next/Previous at the base of each single.php page.

The code is there, but it doesn’t show.
At least I can’t see it in Firefox, IE7, Netscape or Safari for PC.

“Cutline will be XHTML (Transitional) valid and also have microformats on the main and entry pages in the next release.” – FABULOUS!

  • Franky

OMSH, did you add the navigation.php at the end of the entry block in single.php? (before the commentss.php gets called)

  • OMSH

Errm … no. In fact, I am ducking my head in shame b/c I have actually removed it from the stinkin’ template all together and forgot completely about it.

Yes, I raise my hand and humbly accept the IOD award (Idiot of the Day).

  • the taxidermist

I would Love a div so I can add a bg to the outside white space and margins!!! thanks

  • squib

Hi – I have major major problems and I can’t find anyone to fix them. My archives, categories, and search don’t work since I installed cutline. yes, I’ve tried manually hardlinking them in header.php but all I get is a fatal error… any ideas where and how I can fix this? thanks

  • Franky

    the taxidermist, entry upcoming!

squib (and everyone else), I’ll soon have a look at the 3-column versions and correct them.

  • Rolph

    Hi,

perhaps not the best place to ask my question, but since I haven’t found a better place yet… πŸ˜‰ I use this theme as well, but only recently. I noticed that the names of the different posters of articles have disappeared from my site. On this site, they are displayed. How do I change the theme so to display the names of the posters? Any help would be appreciated!

  • Franky

Rolph, scroll up some to comment #17. I’ve explained there how to display the author names. πŸ™‚

  • Rolph

Aaah… mea culpa. I believe the correct term is

    D’oh!

    Thanks!

  • the taxidermist

Franky: I figured it out yesterday, Just took the #container and added a overflow to it and some margins. Played with the settings and now it works both in IE6/7 and FF.

  • squib

Franky, in the meantime I have increased the number of post entries on display. It could end up being VERY long! I’m not so concerned about the categories or search bar as I can manage without them. But I need the archives

  • videojump

I love Cutline and am looking forward to your feeds.

I’m trying to figure out why my previous/next don’t work in single.php, but other than that Cutline still makes me smile and I’m still workin’ with it.

  • HART (1-800-HART)

    off-topic // welcome Franky!

Is it possible to NOT suppress the pictures as you scroll through categories of the archives page?

  • Franky

squid & videojump, discovering why they behave this way is on my list πŸ™‚

HART, //OT, always the same ones isn’t it? πŸ˜›

    That’s an easy question.
Open archive.php/category.php and change the_excerpt to the_content. This way the archives will show full entries, you might want to excludes those pages (/-theyearhere/ and /category/ over robots.txt though.

If you want to have more control over the excerpt, use the excerpt reloaded plugin. Then you can set which options/HTML tags to display. Plugin is documented.

  • HART (1-800-HART)

Thanks for quick reply Franky! // I try to stay away from the ‘excerpt’ myself .. and use ‘evermore’ instead to do that for me (less thinking)

  • squib

I hope your list is a short one Franky!

    πŸ™‚

  • squib

Just to let you know Franky I have paid someone to fix my problem – it’s all working well now

I am really looking forward to using cutline for my new blog!

  • Tony

    Hi,

I am using cutline 3 column. if you go right bottom of the homepage of the blog, there is a previous entries link and also the next entries link if you go back a page.

The problem now is if i go in from these links, my image is not showing.

My image link that is showing should be like this:
    http://myblog.com/myimagefolder/mypic.jpg

When i go to through the previous entries link, my iamge URL becomes like this
    http://myblog.com/page/myimagefolder/mypic.jpg

There is a “page” directory appear out of nowhere.

Is it got something to do with permlinks? i custome the perlinks using $postnew$

    Please help.
