Cutline Theme for WordPress

One Giant Leap for Mankind

Cutline Theme for WordPress header image 2

Cutline 1.3 Released

April 25th, 2008 · 42 Comments · Release Notes

Update – Download links fixed. Spaces, underscores, dashes, oh my. Let me know what you think of the latest edition.

Cutline is still being developed, there are always changes to make, and this time, more than any other release I think I have changed the theme so average users can get into it easier.

Remember that Archive link in the header of every installation? I have since removed it, making sure to use WordPress’ built-in page listing code, so top level pages will be displayed automatically rather than having to edit the theme.

I have also taken some advice given freely to me by Gabriel Radic on his Timbru blog, so if you like the changes, please thank him.

There are no more italics in the blockquotes, I have added some text to the 404 page, so that non-web savvy users understand where they are, and I have removed the comments link from the index page meta-data line. I have also changed the meta-data line to use a san-serif font to be easier to read.

I have also checked the theme for WordPress 2.5 compatibility and haven’t been able to replicate any issues that others have mentioned.

As always, you can find the download link on the sidebar.

what a surprise. cool. cutline 1.3 is out, but the download link dosn’t work.

  • Michael

It seems that there is something wrong with the download links, none of them appear to work

  • Gabriel Radic

Thanks for considering my suggestions Chris.

I did a few other tweaks via custom.css, they may be interesting too.

I am still very interested in the wrapper div on posts, but that’s beyond my php skills.

    Thanks again.

The 2 column download link appears to still not work.
3 column appears to work just fine…but would rather the 2 column.

    Looking forward to this one!

  • Gabriel Radic

BTW, the link is still boken on the sidebar.

There is a small typo error in “functions.php” of theme “cutline-3-column-right-11” in line 6. It should be “register_sidebars(2);”, but the trailing “s” is missing and, as a consequence, the sidebars cannot be registered. Thought you might want to fix it.

Hi, what a great version of Cutline. I just wander if there is a possibility to get the option to change the interface language like it is in service.

Hi, what a great version on Cutline!
Just wandering if there is a possibility to get the option for changing the interface language in it. I would need it in Finnish.

I’m new to blogging. I just started last January. I’ve looked at all 110 pages of WordPress themes and I picked Cutline because of its sophisticated clean look. Also, this site has a lot of support; I’m going to need it because I’m just learning PHP. I was former software engineer at Intel Corp before getting into real estate 4 years ago. Intel sucked the life out of me and I started hating coding; now that I’m not doing it for work, it’s getting to be fun again. Actually this PHP stuff is addicting. Thanks for the new 1.3 release.

Love the there been using it for a while now, but I’m having an issue. Just did some trouble shooting and tracked it back to this theme.

I’m using pod press 8.8 and when the feed is longer than 4 episodes it breaks. The errors are fewer in the latest version of cutline, but still make it non-functional.

Here is the error, any advice? (errors do not occur on default theme)

    This feed does not validate.

line 1, column 0: Undefined root element: br [help]

line 2, column 0: XML parsing error: :2:0: junk after document element [help]

First of all, let me thank you for such a nice template and share with us. I do like the clean design a lot. Actually I didn’t know that templates need upgrade (not that technology inclined) and I have been using probably a version 1.1 for a long time.

I like the 3-column setting because I tend to put lots of stuff on the side bars.

I realize that on the homepage, the “comment” link does not appears right underneath the blog title (though it appears at the bottom of each entry together with the tag). But to view a single blog entry, the “comment” link appears both top and bottom. In fact, in this template of yours, at the homepage, you do have that “comment” link appears right underneath the title. Is there a reason why the 3-column setting does not have it? I did a manual copy-and-paste and now seems to work.

Last but not the least, please continue to support the templates.

    Your fan.

I love this theme. How do I change my header photo?

  • alison

Same question as Susan: Can header photo be changed to my own custom image?

  • NatzG

    Hi Chris,

I am new to Cutline and PHP, but LOVE the freshness of the theme!

On the old version, I spent hours figuring out how to get the pages to show on the horizontal menu bar. And then realized in your latest version that was fixed and now works automatically with WordPress.

I now have a different issue. How do I get the pages to not get created on the horizontal menu? Specifically the Sitemap link? I created the page as instructed, with a sitemap template, but now it’s created a link for it in my 🙁 . So I want my sitemap link in the footer to work, but not to create a link in the menu bar.

Thanks soooo much for your help.

    Hi Chris…

This theme is perfect for what I had in mind esp the header the way the description is not on the image in the header!! My question is this… how can I have the images in each post show on the permalink page!! I use perma links ALL the time and without an image I am stuck!! Any help would be great!!

  • Renovation Therapy

I just converted to the 3 column version and am getting errors messages. Love this design…trying to make it work.

  • Rick

I love the 3 column right theme. I was able to work out all the error messages I was getting. I am not an expert in php but I was able to find a lot of information by searching for my error messages.
My site can be found at…

  • Claire

Okay, I am puzzled… I installed word theme for one site, and it looks/works fine. I installed it (twice now) on a different site, and the font is bizarrely large. I can’t figure out why the font is not normal like your site, and my first cutline site. Any suggestions?

  • Eerik

I have one question – how could I remove those black lines between the widgets on the sidebars?

  • Rick

Sorry but I have not been able to figure out how to remove the blacklines yet. If I do I will let you know.

  • Keith

Hi there, great theme – I love it. But I think it has a bug in it. I am running WP Version 2.5.1 and Cutline 3-Column Split 1.1. For some reason, the theme seems to be disabling the nice WYSIWYG editor for writing posts and pages and leaving me only with the HTML version of the editor. Any ideas on how to fix this?

  • Keith

It appears to be coming from style.css

Look for this section: /*—:[ sidebar styles ]:—*/

Though I am not sure what should be edited to correct it.

  • Walter

I noticed that on your site, the author is listed for each post. I can’t seem to get your theme to do that. Can you help me?
I am using WordPress 2.3.3 with your latest version 2.1

  • Walter

OK… found the post about editing the files for the author name, but I agree with an old post about margins that 800×600 resolution is a thing of the past. How can i edit the theme so that it fills the whole screen. I can’t use my custom 970×160 header images with the current version of the theme, plus, I don’t want the white space on the sides. Thanks

  • baloot

im using this template for my new health blog.

looking to learn how to use rotating images. 😉

anyway, thanks a lot for this template…

  • KipEsquire

Using your template (with some mods) at the link above. Cheers. 🙂

I am having a hard time discovering why the site is not appearing correctly when viewed in Internet explorer. It is fine when I open it up on Firefox.

I am a volunteer for the non-profit and am trying to help. So now I need YOUR help. 😉

    Thanks. I apreciate your time.

  • Jane

    I’m still confused.

I want Cutline 3-column split with the pages along the top.

This limits the number of pages that can be created.
If I want t list them on the side what do I do? I tried using widgets but if you add one thing, it erases all the rest??????

    What’s up with that?

  • Marie

To clarify my problem on the site…

When I open in internet explorer, the sidebars are not in the correct position. They are all bunched up side by side above my post just below the header picture. Any suggestions?

  • Ganesh

Hello everybody. Does anybody have a modified version of Cutline? You know, same framework but different colors, etc.

[…] Cutline, the now ubiquitous wordpress theme by Chris Pearson made a huge impact on the blogosphere soon after it was released to a hungry, theme devouring public. […]

  • Katie

I am having trouble with the theme in Internet Explorer too. Looks fine in Firefox, but pages look crazy in IE, all of the content is on the left.

Sorry to bug you and no I am not versed in code so I’m a pain in the arse. But it hasn’t always done this (I’ve been using the theme since Jan.). I upgraded wordpress thinking this might help, but it didn’t.

    Please help.

  • Katie

Fixed it, was hyperlinking every header image when I only needed to do one, if that makes any sense???

  • WordPress 2.6 installiert

[…] hab ich auch mein Theme auf die neue Version 1.3 […]

  • Eerik

    Thanks, Keith!
    I got it removed now.

What you have to do is to search for this part in style.css:

    li.widget h2, li.linkcat h2 { font-weight: bold; font-size: 1.077em; text-transform: uppercase; letter-spacing: normal; margin: 0 0 0.8em 0; padding: 0.4em 2px; border-top: 3px solid #000; background: url(‘images/hr_dot_black.gif’) 0 100% repeat-x; }

I just changed the 3px to 0px and that’s all there is to it.

  • Eerik

    Oh dear. Another problem.

When viewing my site’s front page in Internet Explorer (7), the posts are the full width of the header image, and the sidebars are down below…
I’m using Cutline 2 column-right, by the way.

This could have been caused by one of my many plugins, but let me know if anyone else has had the same problem.

My site works perfectly fine in Firefox and Opera and individual post pages are also OK, only the front page is messed up.

  • Eerik

    Thanks, Katie!

I removed all the header images and made one static. This solved my problem.

  • Gattune!

Will it use image capiton from WordPress 2.6.1
